Left-handed guitars are harder to find than right handed ones and are sometimes much more expensive. If you don’t want to outlay more than you need to you could consider modifying a right handed guitar.You can modify a cheap used right-handed guitar by doing four things:

1. Purchase a guitar with a floating bridge (the part that holds the strings up off the top of the guitar); if the bridge is glued to the soundboard (as most are) this will not work unless you can prise it off gently without damaging the guitar.

2. Take the strings off and reposition the bridge 180 degrees, so that the grooves for the fattest strings are at the top. (If the small bridge at the top of the fretboard is floating, change this around as well). If the bridge at the top of the fretboard is fixed then you may need to slightly widen the thinnest groove with a small needle file.

3. The holes in the pegs may be suitable and not be a problem. If you cannot fit the thickest bass string through the appropriate peg hole, make the hole larger, using a round file or metal drill.

4. Before you made permanent modifications to some old guitar with a floating bridge that you’ve found at a garage sale or pawn shop, make sure it isn’t valuable! (like an old Fender or Gibson).Enjoy your new left handed guitar!

With symmetrical guitars you can re-string the guitar to play left-handed by swapping round the strings so that the low E-string becomes the high E-string and vice versa. However not all guitars are made equal. 

How To Properly String A Right-Handed Guitar For Left-Handed Playing

For those who want to do it right, this is not a simple job. First, you’ll have to cut a new nut, one that’s intended for left-handed playing. The reason is that a low E string is not meant to rest in the nut slot for a high string. In most cases, it won’t even fit, since the slot is simply too small. Conversely, the slot for the low E string is far too wide for the high E string, which will move around in the groove, thereby creating unstable tuning. The same scenario applies to the other four strings, so -bottom line-cut a new, left-handed nut.

Secondly, not all right-handed guitars can be string for left-handed playing. Some Gibson-style guitars have one-piece "wrap-around" intonation bridges or two-piece Tune-O-Matic bridges that are installed on a slant or angle. When the guitar is flipped upside down for left-handed playing, the intonation points on the bridge won’t be the same as those for right-handed playing, and the saddle adjustments for each string won’t compensate an equal amount for all six strings because of the slanted positioning of the bridge.

Fender guitars string lefty very well, because Strats, Teles, Jags, and other used music guitars, have bridges that sit straight across the guitar’s body. When one of these guitars is flipped upside down, the inherent intonation points don’t change at all, and the intonation can be fine-tuned by using six equally compensating adjustable intonation saddles. If the guitar is properly intonated for right-handed playing, the intonation saddles will look like a mirror image of them when set up for left-handed playing. The high E string saddle will now act as your low E string saddle and need to be adjusted back, away from the neck joint. Respectively, the low E string saddle will now act as the high E string saddle and to be adjusted forward, toward the neck joint. Ultimately all the intonation saddles will need to be repositioned for proper left-hand intonation, but the two E string saddles will require the most adjustment.

These same procedures apply if the guitar in question is a traditional acoustic. But since most acoustic don’t have individual intonation saddles, a new intonation bridge will need to be installed to achieve the same compensation for the intonation points as described for electrics.

Active vs. Passive guitar pickups: is it worth the money to get Active?

Simply stated, active electronics employ tone circuit (which consists of capacitors and resistors) with a power source, such as a 9-volt battery, to help shape an instrument’s sound and tonal capabilities. Passive electronics use a tone circuit without the aid of voltage.

Are active electronics worth the extra money? It depends on what you want to use them for. You have to know what active and passive circuits sound like and which on you prefer. For instance, active electronics can do a lot to shape the tone of a bass guitar. By the same token, active electronics on a guitar tend to sound sterile and cold (to some ears), whereas passive electronics convey a more organic tone.

Amps, too, can have active or passive tone circuits. I own a couple amps with active tone circuits, and the range of attenuation available from the tone controls is wide and impressive. Am I telling you that amps with active tone circuits are better than those with passive tone circuits? No-it’s totally a matter of personal preference and what’s right for you. If you feel active electronics help you express yourself better and make more of a personal statement, whether they’re in a bass, a guitar or an amp, then they’re worth the extra dough. On the other hand, if you’ve heard them and tried them, and you’re not impressed, save your money.

Try at least 10 guitars before you make a decision. It should take you more than an hour, but coming home with a guitar that you are going to use with pleasure makes up for that, believe me.

You need to buy a capodaster as well, it is a great piece of equipment and once you get used to it, you can’t really do without any more. Just put it on the 2nd fret and voila your guitar is tuned two semitones higher. And that makes it a lot easier for you to sing along, you really should try that. Capodasters can be used with any kind of guitar, so they really are a good investment.

When you get better you can always upgrade.

Whether you are buying a new or used acoustic guitar, you will save a lot of headaches if you do your research first. You will need to examine the entire guitar for any visible damage or other imperfections. You want your guitar to have the correct action, intonation, and pitch. Once you found your guitar, it’s time to start practicing. Learning the correct way to practice is probably the most important part of your acoustic guitar playing success. Don’t give yourself super challenging tasks to complete in the beginning. You are setting yourself up for some major disappointment. Start off slow and easy. Learn the easy stuff first then tackle the more difficult stuff later on.

Set easier goals for yourself. When you set easier goals that you know you are capable of doing, you are building confidence and you are making progress.

Think about the growing stages of a newborn baby. The baby does not come right out of the mothers womb and instantly knows how to run marathons. No, he learns to crawl first, then walk, then run. The baby has to develop his muscles first in order to support his body. The same holds true for guitar playing. If you want to be able to produce clean sounding chords or play complicated solos, you have to develop your muscles, and this only happens when you are patient in your practicing. Over time, you will begin to develop what is known as "muscle memory". This refers to the body’s ability to remember, or automatically perform, a well practiced motion. If you ever watch a professional guitar player, you will see this in action as the guitar player plays complicated chords and solos without looking or even thinking about it.

Be persistent. I don’t care if takes you 6 months to learn two chords. Never stop trying. If you have the desire to become a good acoustic guitar player, then you will succeed. It is simply a matter of time.

Listen to as much music from as many different artists as possible. Do not limit yourself to only your favorite artists. There are a multitude of acoustic guitar players out there in a number of different genres including classical, folk, jazz, rock, etc. If you limit yourself to only one particular area, you are depriving yourself of some beautiful music. You never know what artist can influence your playing style. So be open to new styles of music.
